My Favorite Love Poem

By

I remember writing this poem on a flight back home. It was incessantly waiting at the tip of my tongue. Waiting for me to lay out a canvas that it can pour itself into. It came out in a single thread, straight from the heart.

This poem is the answer to a question I have asked myself over and over again since I discovered love is real. It is the peace after the war. It goes like this:

Tell me you love me and it won’t be enough
Show me you love me and
I will forget the moment you are done
I am human that way
Fickle, greedy, ignorant, forgetful
Nothing is ever enough
I am spoiled by a Lord who loves me every second of every minute
Whose love beats my heart and
expands my lungs
Divides my cells and
Paints the sky for my pleasure
You tell me you love me and
I pray you understand
it will never be enough.
For my existence is used to the Eternal One
The one who moves planets to grant my wishes.
The one who stops time as He wishes
The Subtle who loves quietly and with precision.
If you tell me you’ll love me forever,
I’ll know you are lying.
You haven’t met all of me to know
You don’t have an inkling to what the nature of your heart will be in the next second
let alone eons later
So no.
I don’t ask you to love me
it will never be enough.
Loving me is something bigger than
your human nature can bear
and if you tried, you’ll only break
I ask you simply to hold space for my peace
Hold space for the pains I carry
Share with me the joys I am gifted
Share with me your doubts, musings and pain
Forgive me and Pray for my guidance
Take off your armor and grant yourself
a home in me
Be my companion and friend
Guard my honor as best as you can
But most of all,
Love the One who gifted you my heart
The One who decreed you & me
long before the existence of the stars
